Embankment after adding retaining walls

Beta Design Consultants carry out slope stability assessment and geotechnical studies to advise clients on the long-term maintenance of embankments, roads and railways.

Our portfolio:

  • Queensmere Residential Development: Advice to clients regarding building a new development on the foot of a slope in Wimbledon London. Solution proposed was to install contiguous piling to prevent cracking and settlement for properties at the top of the embankment.
  • Lyon Way Industrial Development: Advice to client regarding the expansion of an industrial yard into the foot of an embankment that is part of National Rail. Proposed solution was to install modular retaining walls to allow the expansion of the yard into the embankment.
  • Willow Road Residential Development: Advice to client regarding the failure of a retaining wall supporting a London TFL embankment managed by local authority. Proposed solution was to rebuild the retaining wall using pre-cast modular retaining wall.
  • No 1 Film Studios Development: The development was separated from an existing residential development by an embankment that seemed to be steep and required assessment. We carried out slope stability analysis and provided advice regarding slope drainage and maintenance to reduce risk of slope instability.

Our Solutions

In each of the above cases and in all our slope stability assessments, we base our studies on detailed soil investigation, assessments of ground water, slope failures modes before moving to recommendations. Measures recommended to clients take into account capital costs and whole life costing.

Options we usually consider cover the spectrum of slope stabilisation methods adopted in the industry and approved by authorities:
Improving Slope Drainage: Our services include detailed drainage studies and construction drawings showing recommended measures, bills of quantities and specifications of required materials.

  • Soil nailing (or ground anchors): Our services include detailed design of nails/anchors, construction drawings, bills of quantities, specifications and testing required for proof loading the nails/anchors to ensure they deliver the required performance.
  • Facing systems: These systems enhance slope stability through soil retention while at the same time encouraging vegetation growth. We advise clients on suitable facing system type or supplier. Options recommended include pre-seeded geomats, post-seeded geomats (hydra-seeded), geomats with mesh, geomat with geo-composite layer, biodegradable cellular modules, geo-cell baskets, crib walls or any of those installed with soil nails or earth anchors.
  • The choice of the suitable system depends on slope angle and orientation while considering capital and whole life costing.
